Can Fun Games Be Educational?

I hear this question a lot from parents. As an educator I encourage parents to play games with their children because yes, fun games can be educational.

Let’s look at some of the concepts that are reinforced by playing games. First, consider the fact that by playing games kids are learning to take turns. Children grow up with a natural need for instant gratification. Game play teaches patience and an understanding that everyone gets a chance and that their turn will come again.

Secondly, there are usually a set of skills required to play a game. The skill set may be very simple like moving a pawn around the game board. But even in this simplistic setting the kids are learning to associate numbers with their values as they count the spaces and move their game piece forward. Some games reinforce knowledge of color while others include money skills. Some games will require skills that are obvious while others will be less so.

Some fun games go beyond basic skills and require higher level thinking like reasoning, understanding cause and effect, strategizing and synthesizing information in order to accomplish the object of the game. It is exactly these skills educators hope to instill in students. What better way for them to learn than to play games and spend quality time with their parents and families.

Whatever game you choose to play, I am fairly confident there are skills that young players will learn to reinforce those they learn in school. Be sure to have age appropriate games available and follow your children’s lead. Most importantly, Have Fun!

Three Ways to Help Your Kids Pick Up Their Stuff

If you have kids, then you know that your house can get cluttered faster than you would like. Toys, games, clothes, shoes, roller skates – you name it, their stuff is everywhere! These items can be found in the hallways, dining room, under the dining table, and nearly anywhere but where they should be. This may be especially true if you have younger kids that get easily distracted and often leave their toys and other things where ever they may be at the moment.

It becomes an additional chore just to get these toys picked up! There are a few little tricks that you can use to help keep your house uncluttered by getting your kids to help pick up their stuff. Here are some ideas to help encourage your kids to pick up their stuff and keep your house clean.

* Make it easy for your kids to pick up clutter
The easier it is for your kids to pick up their clutter, then the easier it will be for you to help persuade them to do so! You should create baskets or toy boxes that are clearly labelled so that children know exactly where to put their belongings. For instance, you can designate a plastic bin to art supplies, the hamper for dirty clothes, a little bookcase for books and other media, and so on. The more familiar your kids are with where their belongings belong, then the easier and faster it will be for them to put their things away. If creating storage spaces for their things is a new concept for them, then you should walk them through the process a few times until they are comfortable with the new system.

* Schedule a pick up time
This is an area where every family member can become a part of. Schedule a time every day where every child and adult in the home drops everything, not literally though, and starts to pick up their stuff and put it in the right place. Mom could pick up her stuff, like books, folded laundry, and other things and start putting them away. Dad could pick up his shoes, magazines, and other things and put them in their place. And, of course, the little ones will be responsible for picking up their toys and clothes and putting them away. By getting everyone involved, and turning off the television, radio, and computer monitor — you will help to make your children feel like they are part of the team and not being punished. An added bonus, will be the “non-kid” house clutter will also be put away!

* Make it a game!
Kids love games, and cleaning up their clutter can become a fun game! Consider making it a counting or a color game. If they pick up seven things, then you will pick up seven things. Or consider having them pick up all the toys that are blue first, then red, then green, and so on until all the colors of the rainbow are picked up. Making clean up time a game can make the chore go by much faster and turning it into a educational game can also be beneficial. If you have more than one child, then you can split the game up so that each child has his or her own objective.
